How to Store Your Roof Box When It’s Not in Use

A roof box is a brilliant investment — but what happens when you don’t need it?
Improper storage can lead to warping, cracking, or broken hinges, so if you want your box to last, here’s how to store it safely between trips.

🧼 1. Clean It Before Storage

Before you put it away:

  • Wash it with mild soapy water

  • Rinse off road salt, bugs, and bird droppings

  • Dry thoroughly with a soft towel to avoid mould

✅ Don't use pressure washers on seals or hinges

🧰 2. Inspect Hinges, Locks & Mounts

Check for:

  • Any cracks or damage

  • Loose bolts or clips

  • Dirt or sand in the lock mechanisms

  • Rubber seal wear (replace if cracked)

Apply a small amount of silicone spray to hinges and locks if they’re stiff.

🏠 3. Best Places to Store a Roof Box

Where you store it matters:

Garage wall or ceiling (with proper straps or hoist)
Loft or shed, ideally dry and dust-free
Under a bed or sofa, if space allows (some boxes are low-profile)

🚫 Avoid:

  • Outdoor sheds that get damp

  • Leaning it vertically on concrete (can warp the base)

  • Storing with weight inside

🧱 4. Use a Wall Bracket or Hoist System

If you’ve got the space, a wall bracket or ceiling hoist is best:

  • Keeps the box out of the way

  • Prevents accidental damage

  • Reduces strain on hinges

📦 5. Store It Empty and Unlocked

Storing it empty prevents stress on the box shape.
Storing it unlocked prevents pressure build-up around the latches and stops seals getting crushed.

✅ Leave the lid slightly open to allow airflow
✅ Avoid stacking anything on top of it

🛡️ 6. Cover It If Storing Long-Term

Use:

  • A fitted roof box cover

  • A soft dust sheet or breathable tarp

  • Even a spare duvet cover works in a pinch

This prevents dust build-up and stops UV damage if there’s a window nearby.
